Mobile phone mast plans for Shrewsbury
Thursday 2nd December 2010, 11:29AM GMT.
Three mobile phone base stations could be created in Shrewsbury – along with new antennas and upgrades to existing masts – following a deal between two of the largest networks.
O2 Telefonica and Vodafone has submitted a total of six planning applications to Shropshire Council to put up new masts and carry out alterations at old sites as part of a mast-sharing agreement.
The plans will see proposed telecommunications base stations created at Tilstock Crescent and Belvidere Road, both in Belvidere, along with another one at Roman Road.
At Masonic Lodge in Crewe Street, O2 is also proposing to site three antennas, internal cabinets and associated development.
One of the applications proposes an upgrade to the Vodafone mast on Copthorne Road, which provoked angry protests from residents when it was initially applied for last year because of its close proximity to two primary schools.
Illana Clark, spokeswoman for Cornerstone Team, which represents O2 and Vodafone, said: “Vodafone and O2 have decided that we will share network assets wherever we can.
“This will reduce the overall number of new base station locations for both parties and therefore reduce deployment costs and follow the guidance set out in planning legislation.”
