Benbow statue is backed

Campaigners who want to see a permanent memorial to one of Shrewsbury’s most famous sons have been told a place will be found for one – if they can fund it.
Shrewsbury Town Council has told residents that a statue or sculpture to honour Admiral John Benbow can be erected on council-owned land.
Peter Nutting, council leader, said: “What the council has agreed is that if the people promoting it can provide the funds they can arrange for the statue to be built and we will provide a location.
“It would probably be in Coton Hill or the Quarry.”
Andrew Finch, of Wattlesborough, near Shrewsbury, who started a Facebook campaign for greater recognition of the Admiral, said they had not asked the council to fund the statue but had been waiting for confirmation that a location would be provided before they began fundraising.
He said in the New Year they would start to research what sort of statue or sculpture people would like to see and get a quote for the cost.
He said: “The campaigners as a group will start fundraising now.”
