A Shropshire MP made no expenses claims during the first session of the new Parliament, it was revealed this afternoon.

Mark Pritchard declined to submit a single claim between May and August. Other Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin MPs made uncontroversial expenses claims. Government Minister Owen Paterson, the MP for North Shropshire, made the highest claims, requesting £8,413.98 between May and August.

Mr Paterson, Ludlow MP Philip Dunne, Montgomeryshire MP Glyn Davies, Shrewsbury & Atcham MP Daniel Kawczynski and Telford MP David Wright made combined claims for £32,654.68.

However, people who tried to log onto the new Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority website today faced major delays – as the system repeatedly crashed and failed to cope with demand.

One Telford resident trying to check MP David Wright’s expenses said: “The system is dreadful, it really doesn’t work. It repeatedly times out and goes back to the start.

Ludlow MP Philip Dunne maintained his reputation for claiming minimal expenses by making just 16 claims to the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority.

He made 11 minor claims of less than £100 for travel, general admin and stationery while there were three claims of more than £100 for return rail tickets.

Mr Dunne also made a claim of £885 to cover the cost of renting his constituency office and paid a £2,408 bill towards the cost of staffing.

The Conservative MP who replaced colourful Montgomeryshire Liberal Democrat Lembit Opik at the last general election made almost 200 expenses claims for the first session of the new Parliament.

He made daily claims for transport in the summer, requesting reimbursement for sums like £1.60, £2.80, £4, £8 and £9.60.

During the early days of his tenure as MP, he made six claims for accommodation at an interim hotel in London, with claims ranging from £86 to £390.

Mr Davies also made repeated claims on consecutive days for driving to and from Parliament, paying congestion charges and being reimbursed for fuel.

He received £138.65 towards the cost of mobile phone hire on July 15.

David Wright MP’s biggest expenditure was on rent for his London flat and council tax, with the majority of claims for travel expenses while using his own car. He also spent more than £300 on advertising.

Nationally, the highest claiming MP was Conservative Keith Simpson, who got £20,752 – mostly for travel expenses to and from his constituency in Norfolk.

The lowest claiming MP listed was Labour’s Jeremy Corbyn, who received only £8.70 over the period. Claims published by Ipsa are broken down by date, category, amount and a basic description.

A Freedom of Information request by the Times revealed more than 1,500 claims submitted between May and August were not paid for various reasons – either because of mistakes made by MPs, or by Ipsa itself. Rejected claims will be published in future.
