Telford private hire drivers are to protest
Wednesday 1st December 2010, 3:08PM GMT.
Private hire drivers across Telford are set to protest outside a council meeting today over a proposed increase in licensing fees.
Drivers and operators said they would be holding the demonstration outside Telford & Wrekin Council’s Civic Offices.
Mohammed Zaman, chairman of Telford Private Hire Drivers’ Association, said his members did not want any increase in fees because the cost would have to be passed onto their customers.
The borough council’s licensing committee was due to meet at 6pm to discuss the proposed hike in fees and the legalities surrounding Criminal Records Bureau checks for drivers.
Drivers were also expected to attend the public session after the meeting.
