Tough safety measures for fire-hit Wem factory

Details of tough new safety measures introduced at a factory in Wem hit by three major fires in the last two years will be scrutinised at a public meeting next month, it emerged today.
The meeting on December 6 will let Wem residents hear what steps have been taken to improve safety at Kingpin Tyres on Wem Industrial Estate.
Bosses at the firm, which recycles rubber and produces retread tyres, have been ordered to store rubber in smaller piles and allow regular inspections to ensure safety measures are being adhered to.
The public meeting comes after the latest blaze in July this year, which caused concern for residents after thick plumes of acrid smoke blew over their homes.
A large pile of 20 to 30 tonnes of shredded rubber stored outside was identified as the source of the fire, and took firefighters hours to bring under control.
Shropshire Council said experts monitored the air quality in the aftermath and were satisfied the smoke posed no long-term health risks, although people were advised to close their windows and doors as a precaution while the fire was burning.
Chris Mellings, Shropshire councillor for Wem, said: “Since the fires, council officials have been working hard with the company to put in place measures to prevent the risk of fire in the future.”
Pauline Dee, Shropshire councillor for Wem, added: “The public will be very interested to hear what measures have been introduced at Kingpin Tyres to reduce the risk of fire in the future.”
The meeting will take place at Shropshire Council’s area HQ, Edinburgh House, Wem, in the council chamber, starting at 7pm.
