Firefighters tackle Shropshire farm blaze
Tuesday 30th November 2010, 11:29AM GMT.
More than 30 firefighters battled a blaze at a Shropshire farm involving up to 300 tonnes of straw.
Crews were called to the fire at Huxley’s Farm along the B5476, in Coton, near Whitchurch, just after 7.30pm yesterday.
They are expected to remain at the site until around noon today when the fire at the six-bay Dutch barn is expected to be fully extinguished.
No one was hurt in the incident but officials will begin an investigation today with the cause of the fire still unclear.
Tony Druce, incident commander, said 10 firefighters remained at the site overnight and the same number of officers will stay at the scene until noon today.
He said: “It was a big fire but luckily it was not near any residential properties. It all depends on weather conditions and the wind but we hope to have the fire out by lunchtime.
“Around 300 tonnes of straw were on fire. We have spoken to the owner of the farm but we don’t know how it was started.”
He added: “We will be carrying out an investigation when the site is safe for investigating officers to start their work.”
Appliances from Prees, Whitchurch, Shrewsbury and Wem attended with a heavy pumping unit from Prees and a mini-pumping unit from Shrewsbury.
An incident commander was also sent from Shrewsbury along with a water carrier from Bridgnorth.
Buildings
A spokeswoman for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said no one was hurt in the incident but a number of firefighters were needed to control the situation.
She said: “About 30 fire officers attended the scene at the height of the fire, but a lot of them had left by 9.30pm. No one was hurt in the incident. Two hose reel jets were used along with one covering jet to protect the adjacent farm buildings.”
A combine harvester and tractor are believed to be among the farm machinery damaged in the fire.
