Crunch meetings over Emstrey crematorium future

Crunch meetings have been arranged to discuss the future of one of Shropshire’s biggest crematoriums.

Shrewsbury Town Council will meet counterparts at Shropshire Council to thrash out the finer points before a decision on whether to push ahead with plans to take over the Emstrey crematorium in Shrewsbury.

Members of the town council met last night at the Guildhall amid concerns it could be sold off to a private firm in a multi-million pound deal.

Councillor Alan Mosley said today members would be meeting with officers to talk through the “financial” and “operational” details of the services.

He said: “We’re opening up discussions with Shropshire Council and then we will report back to the full council.

“It now appears Shropshire Council are trying to split the services up into three sections, the Crematorium, the town’s cemetery on London Road and the closed church cemeteries across the county.

“With that in mind we are trying to find out more about each option.

“Some parts of the bereavement services are profitable and some are not, and the town council is still trying to find out what the viable options are.

“We are still looking to take over the running of some of the facilities subject to the right deal being stuck.
