Oswestry bowling green future in doubt
Saturday 27th November 2010, 11:21AM GMT.
A bowling green which has been in Oswestry for more than 70 years may be taken away unless more people start using it.
The facility has been in Cae Glas park since 1932 for the public to use but numbers have dropped in recent years,
Councillors have now been given 12 months to decide whether to keep the green or find an alternative use for it.
Glenys Davies, facilities manager for Oswestry Town Council, said: “We haven’t got anybody to play on the bowling green. It was used regularly but now it seems that people don’t play anymore.
“There used to be clusters of people there but it just hasn’t had the use in the last couple of years.
“It means we can’t really afford to keep it.
“Without sufficient numbers we have to look at turning it into something else.”
She said the area could become another tennis court, a five-a-side pitch or an extension to the nearby children’s play area,
“It would be a pity to see it go,” she said. “It is a case of use it or lose it. We have 12 months to turn it around.”
Bowlers are charged £1.60 a session of £1 for juniors and the council are urging bowling clubs to come and make the most of the facility.
People or clubs who would like to use the green are asked to call Glenys Davies on (01691) 680222.
