Major plans for Shropshire hospitals shake-up
Saturday 27th November 2010, 11:22AM GMT.
Details of a massive planned shake-up of health services in Shropshire which would see major changes to the county’s two main hospitals emerged today.
Telford & Wrekin Council chief Andrew Eade claimed emergency operations would still be carried out at the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford under the proposals but all other acute surgery would be transferred to Shrewsbury.
Councillor Eade said health bosses had told him Telford would be left with cover provided by an on-call team of experienced surgeons for emergency cases.
A new women and children centre would be created at the PRH which would become the main site for midwifery and inpatient paediatrics.
Previous plans, which involved downgrading the PRH, met with a storm of opposition last year and were eventually shelved.
Councillor Eade said: “One of the principal issues that we originally discussed and made abundantly clear to them was that we would vehemently oppose, as we did before, any attempt to downgrade full A&E cover at either the PRH or the SRH and that, secondly, we would expect to see a fair and equitable division of services across both sites.
“I have to say that I believe a genuine attempt has been made to meet these two basic requirements.”
The hospital trust, NHS Telford & Wrekin and Shropshire County Primary Care Trust said: “Local NHS organisations in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin agree that reconfiguration of hospital services is vital, so that local people have access to safe, sustainable care across two vibrant hospitals in Shrewsbury and Telford.”
The proposals will be presented to the three local NHS trust boards on Thursday.

How much do the Health Service waste with all these organsational changes? Have the idiots not realised yet that the fact they keep changing means they have not found the ideal way of doing things BECAUSE IT DOES NOT EXIST. Why can’t they just stick with one way of doing things rather than looking for some nirvana that clearly doesn’t exist.
How much do they need to waste on business consultancy & change managers who want to perpetuate a state of change to justify their own existence.
