Shropshire’s 500,000 tonnes of waste
Friday 26th November 2010, 6:01PM GMT.
Shropshire produced nearly half a million tonnes of waste in the last 12 months, new figures revealed today show. County households produced 236,278 tonnes of rubbish over the course of the last year.
A further 251,306 tonnes of municipal waste was also produced across Shropshire.
The data, released by Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, shows a 25,000 tonne reduction since 2007.
And county residents are also sending nearly 13,000 more tonnes of rubbish for recycling compared with three years ago.
Tim Sneddon, head of environmental maintenance at Shropshire Council, attributed the success to a change in attitude.
He added that the clean-up operation across the Shropshire Council area was being helped by people serving community sentences.
“We are in week four of a programme where people undergoing community service work with us on a litter pick,” he said.
“We have a 13 week programme and we would like to expand that because it is proving a real success.”
And it was more good news in Telford & Wrekin – where more than 3,000 tonnes of rubbish are now recycled compared to 2007.
Councillor Adrian Law-rence, cabinet member for environment and rural area, said: “We are pleased that figures recently published by Defra show Telford & Wrekin is continuing to see reductions in the amount of waste produced in the borough.”
