Power cut hits Shrewsbury town centre
Thursday 25th November 2010, 12:52PM GMT.
Trading was stalled as nearly 30,000 homes and businesses in Shrewsbury were hit by a temporary interruption to their mains power supply today.
The incident happened at about 11.40am and properties in the town centre and Abbey Foregate were among those affected.
The power cut lasted for about five minutes and businesses lost lights, phones and mains power. Traffic lights were also affected.
A spokeswoman for Central Networks said: “The power was back by 11.49am. It went off at 11.43am.
“It was pretty widespread and 29,000 customers were affected.
“The fault will be investigated and the cause is not yet known.
“We’re happy everyone is back on so quickly and apologise for the power cut.”
Nicholas Pitt, manager of the Darwin, Pride Hill and Riverside Shopping Centres, said they had not had to evacuate the centres and had switched to their back up generators.
He said: “Central Networks said there was a major outage in Roushill.
“We lost power in the town centre.
“They seemed to be working very hard to get the power back.
“The power has been going on and off intermittently so we are using our generators and have switched a few things off so they last longer.
“The centres remain open for business.”
Sian Jenkins, restaurant manager at the Peach Tree, in Abbey Foregate, said: “We were panicking a little bit because it was 10 minutes before our lunch time rush and we had 40 people booked in.
“It clicked back on just in time as there were a few things cooking in the oven we were worried about as well.”
