Shropshire’s council gritters out as freze hits
Wednesday 24th November 2010, 11:23AM GMT.
Gritters were out and about across Shropshire and Mid Wales as temperatures dropped below freezing overnight.
Drivers were warned to take care on rural roads travelling to work this morning as some were left icy following the frost.
In the Telford & Wrekin area the grit trucks were out in the borough from 8pm yesterday.
And Emma Savage, spokeswoman for Powys County Council, said: “We had gritters out throughout the night across the region as temperatures dipped below freezing.”
Drivers had to scrape off car windscreens this morning after cold temperatures left them covered in a layer of ice.
The weather station at Shawbury recorded a lowest temperature of minus 2.8C (27F) overnight.
The Met Office has issued a weather warning for heavy snow across the UK later this week but Shropshire could escape the showers.
Chief forecaster Eddie Carroll said: “The cold weather is clearly on its way this week and the public are advised to stay up to date with the forecast to make sure they have the latest information regarding the coming weather.
“Drivers are reminded that they should carry out simple vehicle checks before they set out, carry a severe weather emergency kit in their vehicles, monitor the traffic and weather conditions, and plan their journeys.”
Most at risk are the Scottish Highlands, Yorkshire and north-east England, where blizzards and heavy snowfall have been predicted.
Areas of Birmingham, Shropshire and Hertfordshire are less likely to experience snow showers.
Most of the country will see a sub-zero chill tonight, with temperatures expected to fall to minus 3C (27F) and minus 4C (25F) in some places over the next few days.
