Shropshire councils in pledge on Royal Wedding street parties
Wednesday 24th November 2010, 12:32PM GMT.
Councils in Shropshire will make every effort to help people celebrate the Royal Wedding if they want to throw a street party.
Officials are already in negotiations with police and licensing experts so that people who want to host celebratory events are not stymied by red tape. Thousands are expected to organise events as Britons enjoy a bank holiday bonanza and millions get an extra day off to celebrate the wedding.
Prince William and Kate Middleton are to marry in Westminster Abbey on Friday, April 29, next year, which has been designated an official public holiday.
With Easter the weekend before and May Day holiday the following Monday, many people will enjoy two four-day weekends in a row.
Today Ron Buzzacott, Shropshire Council’s traffic manager, said: “We understand that street parties are a traditional part of community life; they are a simple way for us to get to know our neighbours and meet members of our community.
“Therefore, we are currently working closely with Telford and Wrekin Council and West Mercia Police to make it easier for people to hold these sorts of local events, without having to plough through mountains of forms and red tape.
“This will be in place at the start of next year – in time for the royal wedding celebrations in April. If the street party is a non-profit making event we will not charge for the road closure.”
Russell Griffin, from Telford & Wrekin Council, said: “As yet, there is no specific set policy regarding the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. However, that is not to say there will not be a policy in due course.
“Presently, we consider applications for these events on a case by case basis. But, we are aware that the Royal Wedding, the London 2012 Olympics and the Queen’s Golden Jubilee are all on the horizon.”
Officials at Shropshire Council and Telford & Wrekin Council said people who want to host celebratory events should contact licensing officers for details.
