Sparrows remain inside Telford Sainsbury’s
Tuesday 23rd November 2010, 9:31AM GMT.
Two sparrows were today continuing to evade capture at a Shropshire supermarket after taking up residence on the shop floor.
Humane traps have been set up inside Sainsbury’s on Telford’s Forge Retail Park but the feathered friends have failed to take the bait.
Ian Sutton, manager at the Sainsbury’s store, said they had one week left to try and get the birds into the traps before looking at other ways of removing them.
Mr Sutton said: “We have one week with the traps and then, in conjunction with environmental health officers, they will look at nets. We are trying to get them out humanely.”
The store has still been unable to sell loose bakery items and cleaners are on hand to clear up any mess the birds may leave.
Mr Sutton said the sparrows, which were now larger than when they arrived, were becoming quite brave and used to humans.

I was in Sainsburys yesterday and saw these 2 feathered friends flying around, what struck me was like all living creatures is that they require water how are they managing to survive?

Er, it’s a food supermarket. They buy their water from row 7.

It is a well known fact within the ornithology community that a single sparrow has the capacity to last 18 days without water. It is thought that they ingest their kidney’s in order for this to happen. This was discovered following a similar incident in Germany whereby a sparrow spent just over two weeks in a local ‘Spar’ store.

It’s easy really just get the council to issue an enforcement notice. After all, their nests may be eco friendly but they haven’t got the hard sought after planning permission!
Yes, but we all know from the Shrewsbury Tesco saga that councillors are a push-over for giving retrospective permission.

I witnessed these last week they were flying over the bakery (checked my bread that day).
