Letter: We were right over not joining the euro
Tuesday 23rd November 2010, 6:00AM GMT.
Letter: Those of us who have consistently opposed Britain’s membership of the single currency (the euro) have had to endure many insults.
The fact remains that we have been proved right over the issue.
Even the man, who at the time of our unceremonious exit from the disastrous Exchange Rate Mechanism was a special advisor to the then Chancellor of the Exchequer, appears at last to agree with us as he has recently gone on record saying that “he was thankful that Britain had not joined the euro”.
That man is now, of course, our Prime Minister.
He won’t thank me for saying this but, just as he was wrong about the euro so he will be proved wrong about his obsession to remain a member of the European Union no matter what the cost to British taxpayers, British industry, British jobs and not least the individual liberty of British subjects.
How long before David Cameron reaches the inevitable conclusion that so many of his voters have already reached which is that we would be “better off out”?

We’d be ‘better off out’ if we manufactured something that nations outside the Euro-zone wanted otherwise it’s not a question of ‘in or out’ – we’re in. The reason we’ve been part of the Irish ‘rescue’ package is that they’re one of our top trading partners and not anything to do with a European Union ideology.

In the spirit of edmund Burke, UKIP is right !
Evil pervades when good men remain silent , well done Mr Gill.

I’ve seen bits of X-Factor and I can tell you that ‘evil can also pervade when good men open their mouths.’

Mr Gill seems to have completely failed to understand that if we were to remove ourselves from Europe, we would inevitably put ourselves more into the thrall of the US.
Given that the current financial crisis was caused primarily by the activities of US banks, that seems to me to be a pretty stupid idea.
Perhaps he’s one of those naive enough to think that we can go back to some imaginary idyll of trading with the former commonwealth – forget it – unlike the Little Englanders, they’ve moved on.
As far as human rights are concerned, perhaps he’s also one of those who associates the EU with the ECHR – they are not linked, but it’s an ignorant assumption often made by xenophobes.
If we were to stand alone in the way he suggests, then I suspect our currency would become the next target of inrternational speculators – who would we turn to to help us then?

Ok, here we go again with Peter and his M.O -”xenophobes”,”Little Englanders” ect.
The British people simply want British freedom, Peter.

Currency union means genuine economic and political union where economic survival is ultimately the responsibility of the “federal government” which issues bonds and can borrow on international markets. That was and still is the basic aim of the Euro, to further political integration. If Britain as a nation does not want further integration then we should never join a system that is designed to further integration. Joining the Euro means nothing less than giving away the sovereignty of out own government to control its own currency.
All other arguments as to the hypothetical benefits of being in the Euro zone are both spurious and now proven to be erroneous, ask the people in Spain, Portugal, Ireland and Greece who are being forced to suffer drastic cuts in their standard of living or ask the people in Germany who are being forced to dig into their pockets to support the Euro. The only way the Euro can survive is by increasing the political integration of its members if that integration is not continued then the Euro will fall.
