Oswestry’s Bailey Head in Christmas free car park plan
Monday 22nd November 2010, 12:12PM GMT.
Oswestry’s Bailey Head is to become a free car park for shoppers in the run-up to Christmas in a bid to woo more people to the town.
The town council successfully applied to Shropshire Council allow free parking next to the Guildhall throughout December.
Parking will not be allowed when outdoor markets are held every Wednesday, Saturday morning and for the Christmas farmers’ market on December 17.
Oswestry town council runs the vast majority of the town’s car parks.

Far from putting a damper on the free parking, which is a very good idea. Surly people who work in town would then go there to park, leaving not many spaces for the shoppers.
Shame the council can not make oak street, free parking long stay which would hopefully encourage the town workers to park.

I totally agree with you. With all the car parks in the town, including the one Behind the Market Hall and nearby Oak Street, they allow what is a public square, meant for pedestrians and shoppers, to have cars.

I also agree with the above.. there are plenty of car parks in the town which shoppers already use. Is the use of Bailey Head purely for economic reasons so that money isn’t lost from the budgeted revenue of car parks for the next financial year?..
I would have thought that the extra footfall in the towncentre would be of more use to the council coffers than a few hundred pounds in car park charges lost for a few days.
