Warning over Shrewsbury fires
Friday 19th November 2010, 11:01AM GMT.
Arsonists could put lives in danger by starting fires on a Shrewsbury estate, a fire officer warned today.
Fire crime officer Derek Taylor said they faced life in prison for arson with intent to endanger life.
He said fire and police officers were working closely on investigations after suspicious fires in Herongate and in the Ellesmere Road estate area in recent months.
Residents are being urged to be vigilant and to ensure bins are locked away and outbuildings are secure.
The warning comes a day after a fire at a storage building in Ellesmere Road which is suspected to have been started deliberately.
It sparked fears the blaze could spread to Robson Stores in Ellesmere Road, and follows a number of suspected arson attacks on the Herongate estate.
Firefighters have been called out to fires involving rubbish and bins, while in Thornton Road last month residents were forced to flee their homes following a suspicious fire.
People living in the Herongate area have been taking extra precautions to protect themselves, including taping up letterboxes.
Mr Taylor said: “We’ve had problems in the Herongate area and there’s also been fires in and around the Ellesmere Road estate which are possibly connected.
“We’re working closely with West Mercia Police. There’s a danger one of these buildings will catch fire and somebody could lose a life as a consequence.
“We’re asking people to be vigilant and if they have information to tell police,” he said.
