Fundraisers across Shropshire were uniting today to raise cash for Children In Need in a bid to smash last year’s grand total of £39 million.

Kind-hearted businesses, schools, councils, hospitals and residents were holding a variety of fundraising events led by the “Show Your Spots, Let’s Raise Lots” appeal slogan.

A host of spotty fancy dress parties were being rolled out across the region.

Among those taking part in Shropshire was AMF bowling in Harlescott, Shrewsbury, which was holding a 24-hour bowlathon.

The BBC’s Children In Need live appeal will be aired tonight with a variety of entertainment acts, all doing their bit to raise money for disadvantaged children and young people across the UK. There will be starring appearances from the casts of Coronation Street and EastEnders with Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button going head-to-head in a go-karting challenge.

The programme will also feature broadcasts from around the UK, as BBC presenters join their local communities to catch up with fundraising exploits.

Natasha Ayivor, spokeswoman for Children In Need, said: “Last year, thanks to the amazing generosity of the British public, a record breaking £39 million was raised. This is being used to really enhance the lives of thousands of disadvantaged youngsters right here in the UK.”
