Nesscliffe businesses fear ‘devastation’ during roadworks
Friday 19th November 2010, 8:00PM GMT.
Major roadworks could “devastate” businesses in Nesscliffe, a village businessman warned today. Mike Dransfield’s family runs the village store, post office and filling station.
He said businesses were anticipating a huge drop in customers because of the Severn Trent sewage works.
The area’s MP Daniel Kawczynski today echoed those concerns, warning the works were the “last thing” business needed in the current economic climate.
Severn Trent is carrying out the laying of a new gravity sewer pipe in Nesscliffe, with work continuing into the new year.
The work could see the closure of the road through Nesscliffe to daytime through traffic for five weeks in February to April.
The water firm today said it was aware of concerns and was taking “sensible steps” to minimise any disruption to residents and businesses.
Mr Kawczynski, MP for Shrewsbury and Atcham, said: “During this difficult time local businesses are currently enduring, the last thing I want for them is to see their trade fall because of nuisance roadworks.
“Whilst I understand this work may be necessary, I would like assurances from Severn Trent that everything possible is done to cause minimal disruption to residents and businesses.”
Mr Dransfield said: “I think this could devastate the businesses in the village. We have been here for 29 years and it will hit our custom because people come here out of convenience.”
Severn Trent spokeswoman Gill Dickinson said: “We’re meeting with MP Daniel Kawczynski next week to discuss the matter.”

So what would they prefer, raw sewage leaking out into the watercourses and aquafer?

I suppose to keep Mr Dransfields pockets bursting STW could always do all of the work through the night. It would solve his foot-fall issues.
Meanwhile he’d better get down to the cash & carry and stock up on those ear-plugs the residents will be craving for.

The newspaper would seem strangely void without at least one businessowner bellyaching, triple whammy this time he owns three businesses!!!!

Mr Dransfield should not worry too much –
Anyone not buying from the Nescliffe Service Station could buy fuel or supplies from his other garage on the Nescliffe by-pass.
