Flytippers ruining Clee Hill beauty spot
Friday 19th November 2010, 6:59PM GMT.
Discarded tyres, electrical equipment and building rubble have been dumped at one of Shropshire’s most striking beauty spots by flytippers.
The mess has been left at the top of Clee Hill to the anger of local farmers and residents, who say flytipping is a growing problem in the area.
Officials from Clee Hill Commoners’ Association and Shropshire Council’s street scene team will meet at the site on Monday to examine the rubbish and decide how to dispose of it.
Association officials claim it is the most rubbish left at one spot in the county in recent times.
Chris Neal, chairman of the commoners’ association, said: “There’s everything up there – parts of showers, building waste, rubble, refuse pipes, electrical equipment and about 10 tyres.
“I’m meeting with staff from Street Scene on Monday morning to have a look at the rubbish and decide what to do.
“It happens on a regular basis and it’s definitely getting worse with more incidents and more being left.
No-one from Shropshire Council was available to comment as the Shropshire Star went to press.
The commoners’ association is responsible for maintaining the common.
Earlier this week concerns were raised about sheep being shot and attacked by dogs on the common, with posters advising people to keep their dogs under control due to be set up in the next few weeks.
There have also been a number of incidents of sheep being hit by cars.
Mr Neal added: “We want speed bumps put in on some of the minor roads to slow cars down. Some people drive so fast on the small lanes over Clee Hill and there have been instances where they have whacked into sheep and killed them.”

digusting in an AONB or anywhere, why dont the council get tough with these people, they should be jailed for this, fines simply arent enough because the cost of (legal) waste disposal is higher than the fine

these idiots have caused fly tipping with their stupid short term cuts, now please can we have the skips back
Report abuse
I don’t think that would make any difference. They scrapped household recycling skips, but this was commercial waste.

cant believe this is only now making the papers its been a massive problem up here for years, its on the road to kiddy so you get a lot of the ‘white van man’ types, its blighting the whole area everywhere you go for a walk there is something dumped, it doesnt help there is no where round here to take anything either with the nearest tip being bridgnorth or maybe kiddy either way its almost a 50 mile round trip
go up to the old quarry and take a look if you dont beleive me, its a disgrace up there

if anyone knows the stupid lazy scum bag who did this i hope they grass them up

Might I suggest some CCTV?
An alternative approach could be that the council or environment agency or who ever launch a sting operation, try getting builders in to do work and see if they’ll give you a discount on the skip hire so to speak, catch them red handed and close them down, i beleive the US police do this all the time, called “entrapment” Uk law doesnt like it but it works, i think it should be tried for this type of thing, and also for testing shop owners to see if they will sell alchohol to under ages perhaps?

speed bumps? on rural lanes? are they serious, these people are mad, surely if you leave the roads to go a bit rough it would have the same impact at a fraction of the cost
Report abuse
wait a minute – read the article – all this waste – tyres, rubble etc, this could all be recycled if people just bothered to take it to the craven arms recycling centre
Report abuse
It costs money to get rid of commercial waste, which is why these lowlifes dump it illegally.

clearly demonstrates the need for a cheap, free or subsidised waste disposal service for businesses in this area – south shropshire council used to provide one – since the unitary came into being they have just cut cut cut and ruined this area – its so short sigheted because in the long run it costs more to clear up and if businesses go bust or get fined then the council will have no business rates to collect will it now!
Perhaps if the Council didn’t charge small businesses to get rid of low-level waste, we’d see a sharp decline in fly-tipping.

totally agree

you cant seriously blame the council for someone being criminal and breaking the law can you – seriously??!!!??? no you cant, is it there fault that someone got raped and murdered somewhere because they cut the cctv budget? get over it, the cuts are needed becuase clown brown and bliar backrupted this country, now things like this will have to go and people need to step up and not use it as an exucse to behave in a criminal manner

Did anyone say the council is to blame for fly tippers? I suggested they could change how they charge for disposing of waste to combat it at source. It would probably cost them less than cleaning up afterwards too, so everyone’s a winner.
Incidentally, are you seriously comparing fly tipping with rape and murder?
the only people to blame for this are the criminal gangs who fly tip professionally for profit because its cheaper than recycling or legal landfill charges, these people need to be locked up behind bars, period
