Blog: Royal Wedding media fever – but what about Canadians?
Friday 19th November 2010, 8:59AM GMT.
Judging by the amount of coverage of the Royal engagement in the Canadian media, the country, as a whole, is fascinated by the Royal Family, writes Rebecca Lawrence from Moose Jaw, Canada.
It plays big here and despite what some people might think, the monarchy still plays a huge role in Canada.
The announcement of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s engagement has been covered extensively in newspapers and on television and radio.
On Tuesday, CBC News and CTV News both showed hour long documentaries about the engagement.
The Globe and Mail, one of Canada’s national newspapers, featured an eight-page souvenir supplement full of articles and pictures about the happy couple.
The supplement included commentary on the announcement, which was made under the glare of television cameras, what the wedding might be like, where it might be and, of course, speculation on who might design the wedding dress.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper has congratulated the young couple and said it would be an honour to welcome Prince William and his bride to Canada in the future.
A visit would certainly rejuvenate the Crown in Canada.
For while the Canadian media has taken the romantic story to heart, I’m not sure the public is as fascinated.
Speaking to a couple of my colleagues, some had never heard of Kate Middleton, although they all agreed she was very attractive, while others didn’t care about the news one way or another.
However, when I mentioned the prospect of an additional bank holiday in Britain to mark the couple’s marriage next year, they all thought that would be a good idea for Canada to follow.
