Severn Trent told to rethink Telford sewage station plan
Thursday 18th November 2010, 12:01PM GMT.
Severn Trent officials looking to build a controversial new sewage pumping station in a Shropshire village have been told to investigate other possibilities for the facility by councillors.
The application for land at Sytch Lane, Waters Upton, to provide a new sewage pumping station came before Telford & Wrekin Council’s plans board last night.
But after hearing objections from local residents, councillors asked the water company to provide them with options for other locations, or a conclusive reason why Sytch Lane was the only site which could be used.
Councillor Stephen Bentley, ward member for Ercall Magna, told members of the committee that he couldn’t understand why Severn Trent wanted to build on greenbelt land instead of using another site.
He said: “The development would be going on the only part of greenbelt that’s in the area. If you come down the road a little bit there is a parcel of redundant land there and it makes more sense to look at that.”
Parish councillor Chris Purves said: “We think it’s an inappropriate development in the wrong place.”
Alan Hardwick, speaking on behalf of Severn Trent at the meeting, said the company had been looking for a location since 2007.
The committee voted unanimously to defer a decision.
