Decision due on Oswestry multi-storey car park

Shropshire councillors, meeting at the Guildhall in Oswestry, were due to decide today whether the town should get a new multi-storey car park.

The new two-storey 163-space car park in Middleton Road is linked to a proposal to build a supermarket on the town’s Central Car Park.

Shropshire Council refused permission for the store and developers J Ross Developments have since appealed against that decision.

Members of the council’s strategic planning committee were due today to be told the new car park is a supplementary application to the Central Car Park plans.

They were due to be asked to decide whether the car park can be viewed as a stand-alone scheme for Oswestry, or whether it can be approved if the supermarket scheme is eventually granted.

Council planning officers have recommended that councillors should confirm that the bid would have been refused as a stand-alone application – due to insufficient information being provided – but that, had the Central Car Park proposal been approved, the bid would have been approved, subject to conditions.

The officers have also said the county highways department had identified concerns with the plan but they were not sufficient to warrant refusal.

The J Ross Developments appeal is due to take place in February.

By refusing the Central Car Park proposal, Shropshire councillors went against their own planning officers’ recommendation.

Councillors last month instead granted planning approval for a rival bid by developers Liberty Mercian to build a supermarket on the Smithfield livestock site.

Today’s meeting was due to take place at 2pm.
