Shropshire jobless figures mirror national trend
Wednesday 17th November 2010, 3:20PM GMT.
Unemployment has fallen by 9,000, but the number of people working part-time because they could not find a full-time job has reached a record high, new figures showed today.
About 1.15 million people had part-time jobs or were self-employed after failing to find a full-time position, an increase of 67,000 over the quarter to September and the highest total since records began in 1992.
Shropshire and Mid Wales mirrored the national unemployment figures, with 284 fewer people claiming the Jobseeker’s Allowance.
In the Shropshire Council area, the number of claimants dropped by 50 in October to 4,452 and in Powys, by 45 to 1,601.
The Telford & Wrekin region showed the largest improvement, with 3,918 people claiming the allowance, down 189 from 4,107 in September.
Nationally, part-timers increased by 94,000 to 18.17 million, while self-employment rose by 112,000 to 4.03 million.
Unemployment fell to 2.45 million, although the number of people out of work for longer than a year jumped by 20,000 to 817,000 and there was a similar rise in those out of a job for over six months.
The numbers claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance fell by 3,700 last month.

I remember the good old pre-Christmas surge in part-time work back in the days when we made things. The flat tone of the headline here is fair enough because there’s no joy to be had in these figures especially when we all know there are an estimated 8 million economically inactive adults out there. It was a good party {3 piece suite – pay nothing for 2 years!} but the hangover comes on the 4th of January when VAT goes up to 20%. Hold on to your hats in 2011.
