Lembit Opik no longer Lib Dem Montgomeryshire candidate
Wednesday 17th November 2010, 11:40AM GMT.
Jungle star Lembit Opik is no longer the Lib Dem parliamentary candidate for Montgomeryshire, the party said today.
Mr Opik, currently starring in ITV’s I’m a Celebrity . . . Get Me Out of Here! show in Australia, lost the title following the party’s annual meeting.
It is not known if Mr Opik will reapply for the role, with the new candidate being chosen in May.
Barry Long, Montgomeryshire Lib Dem chairman, said Mr Opik “remained the official parliamentary candidate for Montgom-eryshire for six months after the election. That period has now elapsed and Montgomeryshire Liberal Democrats currently do not have a parliamentary candidate”.
Jos Walker, constituency organiser, added: “Whether or not Lembit decides to apply to be the new Lib Dem candidate is, of course, up to him.”

This is not a new story, it’s just general practice that the candidate remains in place until the AGM after the general election. All political parties are required by law to hold their AGM’s before 30th November.

I think at the next election it will be irrelevant who the LibDem Candidate is because there is no way he/she will get elected after the tuition fee scandal!

They probably will this was one of the Liberals’ safest seats, even keeping it when they were getting <5% of the vote nationally, even if the LibDems do loose lots of seats in 4 years, they'll still probably win this one back, it was Lembit that was the problem.
