A young Shropshire man has received an award for his brave actions during a fatal incident where a cave roof collapsed on a group of youths in Bridgnorth.
Zakk Griffiths, 20, of Lodge Lane, in Bridgnorth, was handed the Royal Human Society Award at West Mercia Police’s Shropshire Territory Commendation Evening, last night.
Friend Philip West, 18, was also honoured with the same award but was unable to attend the event.
They were among a group of youngsters socialising at the Hermitage Caves when a large amount of rock fell from a cave roof on April 6, last year. One of the group, 16-year-old Aiden Brookes, died.
Zakk and Philip were honoured by the Royal Human Society for putting themselves at risk saving the life of one of the group and attempting to save Aiden.
A number of police officers also received commendations, including Constable Kirsty Fitzsimmons who investigated a child abuse case stretching back more than 30 years which resulted in the conviction of a serial offender.
