Armed police swoop after Telford air gun attack
Tuesday 16th November 2010, 1:40PM GMT.
Armed police swooped on a street in Telford after a 61-year-old man was shot with an air gun while riding his bike. The man was delivering a newspaper in Arleston Lane, Arleston, when he was shot shortly after 4pm yesterday.
Police were called after the man was left with a cut to his head. Armed officers and dog handlers were called to search the area.
The man was taken to Telford’s Princess Royal Hospital where he was treated for the cut above his eye before being discharged.
Police said a “low level” armed response was sent to the scene due to the nature of the report. One resident, who watched the police operation unfold but did not want to be named, said: “There were police everywhere. The road was closed and they wouldn’t let anyone near the scene.”
Chris Ammonds, spokesman for Telford police, said: “A 61-year-old man reported hearing a sound which he thought sounded like an air weapon.
“He felt something hit his face and discovered a minor cut on his forehead.”
Witnesses are urged to call Telford police on 0300 333 3000.
