Tributes were today paid to a 50-year-old Shropshire school governor who died after his car was involved in a collision with an ambulance.

Keith Stonebanks, of Upton Forge, near Shrewsbury, was yesterday named by police as the motorist who died in the incident on Saturday.

The “kind” and “generous” man was in his blue Nissan Micra when it collided with an ambulance on the A458 at the Burntree crossroads, near Cross Houses.

Tom Brookes, acting head teacher at St Lucia’s Primary School, in Upton Magna, today said Mr Stonebanks had been a “dedicated” parent governor at the school for several years.

He said: “In his role he fully immersed himself in the life of the school, running after school clubs, building the school website and recording school productions.

“He was dedicated to providing our pupils with exciting learning opportunities. His death has come as a great shock to both pupils and staff who worked with him.”

The collision happened at about 10.45am and police are continuing to investigate the circumstances and have renewed appeals for witnesses to call 0300 333 3000.

It is believed the Nissan Micra had travelled along an unclassified road from the direction of Condover towards the A458 where it was involved in the collision with the ambulance was on non-emergency duty transporting a female patient to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital without blue lights or sirens.

A postmortem examination was carried out yesterday. The coroner for Mid and North Shropshire Mr John Ellery was expected to open an inquest today or tomorrow.
