Shropshire’s Ted Hankey is back on the oche for a much anticipated clash of the world champions with Phil Taylor at the Grand Slam of Darts in Wolverhampton tonight.

Two times world champion Hankey does battle with Taylor – who has won 15 world crowns and is the reigning Grand Slam champion – in their second of three round robin matches at the Civic Hall.

Hankey, of Aqueduct in Telford, enters the game in high spirits after a 5-3 triumph over Wes Newtown in his opening match yesterday.

“Neither of us played our best games but getting the win was the most important thing,” said the 42-year-old.

“We both knew it was important to win this game because we are in such a tough group.”

Taylor also opened with a victory – a 5-1 success over Michael van Gerwen coming in what was his first ever appearance on stage wearing glasses.

And he is relishing tonight’s best-of-nine legs battle with Hankey.

“I’m really looking forward to playing Ted and I know it’s a match the fans will want to see too,” said Taylor. “Just because we’ve both won one game we can’t relax and it will be a belter.”

Hankey believes it is the first time he has faced Taylor in a competitive encounter.

Tonight’s winner will almost certainly qualify for the last 16 knockout stages of the £400,000 tournament, while the loser will have to win his last match on Wednesday to progress.
