The Shropshire soldier killed in Afghanistan on Remembrance Sunday was today described as the “epitome of the Irish Infantry soldier”.
Ranger Aaron McCormick, 22, of 1st Battalion, The Royal Irish Regiment, based at Tern Hill, near Market Drayton, was caught in a blast while out on patrol in the Nad’e Ali area of Helmand province yesterday morning.
North Shropshire MP Owen Paterson, who is also Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, today said that the death of the soldier on Remembrance Sunday was a “tragedy beyond words” for his family and comrades.
He said: “On the day that we remembered all those who died defending freedom and democracy, another brave young man gave his life in that cause.
“This conflict is global but the grief and pain of loss is intensely personal.
“My thoughts are with the family and friends of this courageous soldier.”
He said the death was especially sad for him because the regiment had “done brilliantly” settling in to life at a base in his constituency.
Roger Smith, mayor of Market Drayton, said: “It’s very tragic news with the Royal Irish Regiment being based close to us at Tern Hill.
“It’s so sad for everybody in the town and we extend our condolences to the regiment, and the friends and family of the late soldier.”
