Oswestry supermarket plan promises multi-storey car park
Monday 15th November 2010, 12:23PM GMT.
A multi-storey car park could come to Oswestry – but only if one of the rejected supermarket plans is given the go-ahead at appeal, says Shropshire Council.
The council threw out plans for a store and cinema on the town’s Central car park earlier this year but J Ross Developments has appealed against the decision.
Councillors will meet on Thursday to decide whether the car park can be viewed as a stand-alone scheme for Oswestry or whether it can only be approved if the supermarket scheme is eventually granted.
The car park would be built on land off Middleton Road close to the Plas Ffynnon Medical Centre.
It would have two levels with parking for 163 cars.
The plans have brought objections from both the medical centre and two residents whose properties would be less than 20 yards from the car park.
Objectors say the road and nearby junction are already chaotic and congestion would increase if the car park was built.
A report from council officers to Thursday’s Strategic Planning Committee says the Highways department of the council was not against the car park although there were some concerns.
Planning officers are recommending that the committee confirms that the application would have been refused as a stand alone application.
However, the report says: “The main application for Central car park included traffic signals at the Middleton Road/Salop Road junction which would have improved traffic flow.”
Officers recommended that councillors confirm that had the Central car park plan been approved the application would also have been approved, subject to conditions.
