Fears over Whitchurch supermarkets plans

Business and civic leaders in Whitchurch today spoke of their mixed feelings towards proposals put forward by two supermarket giants to create new stores in the town.

Tesco has revealed plans to expand its current operation in the town by creating a new store and petrol station at Edgeley Park – just two weeks after rivals Sainsbury’s announced plans for its own store off London Road.

The news has been greeted with mixed opinions by key figures in the town who think that it could stop people going elsewhere for their shopping, but could also have damaging effects on shops in the High Street.

Councillor Alan Chesters, mayor of Whitchurch, said: “I think a new Sainsbury’s store is very good news as I think it will rejuvenate that end of town.

“I have more concern over the Tesco plans because it involves a big move from the town centre to out of town and think there will be some consequences.

“I know some people are concerned they will affect High Street shops, but they have survived during the Tesco era, so why can’t they survive alongside Sainsbury’s as well.”

Linda Bate, chairwoman of Whitchurch Chamber of Trade and Commerce, said: “I know some people think Sainsbury’s coming to Whitchurch would mean people will stay in the town rather than go elsewhere for their shopping, but others think it will kill the High Street.

“I am sure news of Tesco’s will be met with similar reaction.”

More than 500 jobs could be created as part of the proposals, with the Sainsbury’s scheme poised to create 250 positions, while the Tesco scheme could create work for about 300 people.

The Tesco plan involves the redevelopment of Whitchurch Rugby and Hockey Club but is subject to approval by the club before a planning application is submitted.

Meanwhile, Oswestry Coalition, who for the past several months have been engaged in their own town’s “Store Wars”, is urging people in the town to organise themselves now if they want to fight plans for a new supermarket in their town.

Oh please NO to Tesco, if they redevelopment of Whitchurch Rugby and Hockey Club that will be the end of the Town it’s self, the Tesco we already have don’t have full shelves when you go there. I for one will not go there for my weekley shop, at the moment I shop at Morrisons in Shrewsbury & to be honest I don’t think I will stop going there for my weekley shop, & yes I do use the little local shop as much as I can.
    Keep Tesco OUT!!!!!!

Whitchurch needs BOTH developments for it will bring additional jobs and substantial investmentinto the area. You only have to look at Nantwich, they have three supermarkets but this has no detrimantal impact on the small shops. Contrast the number of independent shops that have opened there in last two years with that of Whitchurch. Their twon centre is vibrant ours is becoming increasingly economically stagnant.

I have visited Whitchurch several times before I realised there was a town at all! The road seemed to go from housing, straight to a car park and then a Tesco store. Only when I decided to venture further, I noticed a delightful, if neglected, town centre, with many signs of former glory and history. Supermarkets close small shops and kill town centres. If the heart of towns dies, so does community spirit and identity.
All that is left is a road to the superstore.

Redeveloping the rugby club? The rugby club don’t own the site, they only lease it from the trustees. I wonder what the trustees think. As I understand that land was left for the people of Whitchurch to enjoy as open space. Also that area of land from the railway line across the rugby club and across the cricket club including the school field was to be kept as parkland landscape. That is why the cricket club were not allowed to sell off surplus land for building. Redevelop the rugby club and Terry Smith will be able to build on the two fields opposite Edgely House. That side will just end up as one big wedge of building.

I think it would be better to leave tescos as it is, say no to sainsburys in whitchurch and bring in a mcdonalds instead. Which will still create a few new jobs and will give the youth of whitchurch somewhere to meet up and hang out rather than the pubs!! Also a cinema/bowling alley/ice rink etc would be good. We need to think about these rather than supermarkets and petrol stations which we already have in the town!

Tesco will have to rethink their security operation if the events of this week are anything to go by. Yobs hurling bottles of vodka had staff running for cover and injuries to shoppers happened. Not a well run store methinks !!
