A major fundraising drive for the £2.5 million restoration of an historic Shrewsbury church has been launched to safeguard the future of the building for the next 100 years.

St Chad’s Church launched the fundraising campaign last night as it looks to raise cash to conserve the tower, carry out external work and to maintain its organ, considered one of the best in the country.

St Chad’s has already raised £800,000 from members of the congregation, the Friends of St Chad’s and an English Heritage grant.

But now a new campaign aims to raise £1.7 million for the Grade I listed building, the only circular Georgian church in the country with its interior still intact.

The Building and Beyond campaign was launched at the church last night at a reception attended by the Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire Algernon Heber-Percy and other dignitaries, including the church’s vicar Reverend Mark Thomas.

Mr Heber-Percy said he was delighted to have been involved in launching the latest fundraising drive for a “really worthwhile campaign to restore St Chad’s which has such a wonderful heritage and important place in the county town”.
