Letter: Do Cameron and Clegg really listen to this music?

Friday 12th November 2010, 5:59AM GMT.

Cameron: "I must say I'm very much looking forward to borrowing Nick's David Bowie and Marc Bolan CD collection." Clegg: "Yes, and I'm also a big fan of urban grime, including Jay-Z and Dyson DC33 Multi Floor."

Letter: Recently in the media there was a good deal of self-righteous indignation about Nick Clegg choosing as his luxury on Desert Island Discs “a stash of cigarettes”.

But as far as I know, not a dicky bird was said about his dreadful choice of records, which was no better than David Cameron’s in 2006.

Between them they picked such giants of modern music as Radiohead, David Bowie, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, The Smiths, REM, The Killers and Pink Floyd. Oh yes, and (in Cameron’s case) Benny Hill!

Both these guys were born into privilege (particularly Cameron), both were expensively and privately educated, both went to one of our top two universities and both regularly rub shoulders with other highly educated people, from whom they surely learn much.

Yet the music they chose to listen to repeatedly, perhaps for years marooned on a desert island, was no better than what would be selected by an average 15-year-old boy or girl.

Even allowing for the fact that politicians suck up to the electorate, they ought to be ashamed of themselves.

What a pile of out-of-touch, utter snobbery!

If I was stuck on a desert island, my first choice of listening would be an audio-book called ‘Basic Survival Skills for Life on A Desert Island’, my second choice would be an audio-book called ‘How to build a sea-worthy raft’ etc through all my first 7 choices (for my 8th I’d pick Mantovani naturally). By picking music, Politicians just show how dumb they are.

I doubt very much that David Bowie, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, The Smiths, REM and Pink Floyd would feature very highly on the playlists of your average 15 year old!

I do hope you’re wrong on that. “The kids” are really missing out if they’re ignoring those artists in favour of X Factor schlock.

I thnk you’ll find that David Bowie, The Smiths, REM and Pink Floyd are on the playlist of your average 15-year old!

I should know, I am one!

Bowie, Cash, Floyd, Radiohead and The Smiths doesn’t strike me as particularly bad, nor the sort of music a 15 year old would listen to. What were you hoping for? Tchaikovsky and Wagner?!

I hear that this has been played at LibDem HQ

“Dark days have arrived in Britain. The coalition government and their toxic flotilla of cuts are ruthlessly hacking away jobs, damaging vulnerable lives and chipping away at the very fabric of our society. We cannot afford to stand by and let this country sail towards a future of inequality.

Fear Not! Captain SKA and his ship have arrived to fight this coalition”
