The final few pallets were today being placed on top of one of Shropshire’s biggest bonfires which is expected to pull in more than 10,000 people to the event this weekend.

Organiser Alf Mitchell said the bonfire in Donnington, Telford, which has taken several weeks to build, was ready for Saturday.

“This year there is going to be another great bonfire and fireworks display,” said Mr Mitchell.

“We are all ready to go and we have thousands and thousands of pallets this year. I would like to thank everyone who donated them because this year we thought we were going to be very low.”

The event will also feature a host of charity stalls and a huge fireworks display.

“We are just waiting for the fireworks to arrive now and then we will be ready to start,” he added.

“There will be lots going on and as usual we have the funfair here.

“The atmosphere will be fantastic, it always is, and the event is free.”

Celebrating its 30th year, the event is expected to see thousands of people arrive in Donnington for the display.

The ground at Broad Oaks playing fields will open to the public at 5.30pm, with the bonfire being lit at 7pm.

Mr Mitchell said: “This is a great family event and we would encourage as many people as possible to come along. There will be other attractions as well, it’s a good evening out.”
