Prime Minister David Cameron has set a date in January to talk human rights with China.

I think Mr Cameron is right to say that the British public expect our politicians to raise our concerns about human rights abuses.

And China, which (according to Amnesty International) puts to death more people than all other countries combined (about 1,700 in 2009) has a long way to go.

However, after hearing George Bush’s brazen justification of water-boarding yesterday, and with plenty of evidence in the public domain suggesting UK complicity in torture overseas, the British public is all too aware that the Chinese government is not the only government in the world to fall short of the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948).

Article 5 of the Universal Declaration clearly states:

‘No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.’

How do ordinary people improve this situation?

By taking a long hard look at our own record and keeping up the struggle to improve the situation worldwide.

    Or in more concrete terms…

By vocally supporting Mr Cameron’s recent decision to hold an inquiry into allegations of UK complicity in torture and rendition,

And by vocally demanding that Mr Cameron discusses human rights issues with his Chinese counterparts.

    Well done, Mr Cameron.
