Trade Union plans Shirehall protest over mileage rates
Tuesday 9th November 2010, 5:00PM GMT.
Trade union members plan to protest at Shirehall on Thursday over plans to cut staffing costs by slashing mileage allowances.
Proposed changes to staff terms and conditions will be presented to the full council on Thursday by its chief executive Kim Ryley.
They mainly focus on car user and mileage allowances affecting about 1,200 staff, and a proposed reduction in redundancy compensation payments.
UNISON members said today they would be demonstrating at the Shirehall.
Patricia Wilson, Shropshire branch secretary, said: “Shropshire UNISON unfortunately failed to agree changes to terms and conditions with the authority. The council are now determined to impose these changes unilaterally.
“Shropshire is a rural county and many staff rely upon cars to visit vulnerable members of the community in their own homes.
“These cuts will have an immediate effect on these frontline staff. This allowance is not an extra, rather it is designed to ensure that cars are roadworthy and safe.”
The council was going to push through changes following the Remembrance Service at the Shirehall.
“At a time when all should be contemplating those who gave their lives fighting for our country, the authority will be undermining dedicated staff,” she added
In a report, Mr Ryley says: “These proposals offer savings in staffing costs of around £1 million a year at a time of need for significant reductions in our spending.”

I feel the union should be fighting to save jobs of the staff at shirehall not worry about milage allowance, and i bet that the staff dont pay to park at shirehall where as other workers do i feel sorry for you all if you have unison to fight for you as they seem toothless and too friendly with the managers for workers facing unemployment fight for it yourself as then you know what you want the trade union movement has become a joke sadly.

What are the details? Do they use their own cars? If so, then it’s reasonable that the going rate of 40p per mile should be paid. If they use a car that’s purchased using a car allowance, then the rate should be more in the region of 15p-25p.
Car users can claim tax relief on the difference between the amount paid and 40p per mile for the first 10,000 miles, then on the difference between the amount paid and 25p above 10,000 miles. Many people don’t know about this, so they don’t bother and they’re missing out on money they’re entitled to.

Fistly, you decide to close down locally-based district and borough councils and make them join together in one very, very large authority.
And then you express shock that council staff have to cover more and more miles in their work!
How does that work, I wonder?
