Bad weather batters Shropshire
Monday 8th November 2010, 9:17AM GMT.
Heavy rain and winds were today lashing Shropshire and Mid Wales as storms swept across Britain.
Gusts of up to 70mph were set to spread misery across the UK with meteorologists saying it was unlikely that any region would escape the gloom.
Parts of Wales and Scotland were expected to bear the brunt of the bad weather before it spreads east throughout the day.
And the longer term forecast fails to lift the dark skies, with storms expected towards the end of the week as well after a brief respite in the middle of the week.
Today a burst main led to water flooding across three lanes of the northbound A5223 near the Wrekin Retail Park and Ketley Brook roundabout in Telford, causing chaos for rush hour motorists.
Driving conditions on many county roads were hazardous from standing rainwater.
Rachel Vince, forecaster at MeteoGroup, said: “There is a deep low moving in from the north west bringing very strong and gusty winds across the whole of the UK.
“Gusts of 40 to 50mph will be typical, with winds picking up to 71mph in parts of western Scotland and the west coast.
“The windy weather will be accompanied by heavy rain that will spread eastwards throughout the day.”
Parts of the Scottish Highlands, Cumbria and the Peak District over 400m could see flurries, forecasters said.
Parts of Wales and Scotland could also face sleet.
Warnings of gale force winds and heavy rain were given in Wales, along with heavy rain and heavy snow in parts of the north west of England.
