Plea to mothers over maternity unit feedback
Saturday 6th November 2010, 11:30AM GMT.
A group aimed at improving maternity services in Shropshire today renewed a call for mothers to have their say.
Visiting times at units in the county are to be discussed at its next meeting.
The maternity services liaison committee was set up to encourage interested parties including midwives and parents to come together. It will be meeting next on November 17 at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
Members say they would like more feedback from users. One of the key issues to be looked at will be visiting times. A Shropshire Star investigation revealed fathers and partners get only six hours a day compared to 12 at many other hospitals across Britain.
Shropshire representative Christine Thompson said: “The more people we can get involved the more we can do to improve services. We have looked at visiting times in the past and ways in which it could be changed to give more support to mothers and it is something which we will be raising again at this month’s meeting.”
Experts and support groups backed a call by Shropshire MPs David Wright and Daniel Kawczynski for an immediate review of visiting times.
Anthea Gregory-Page, senior midwife at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, said current visiting times had been agreed in consultation with mothers.
Cathy Smith, Head of Midwifery at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, said: “We aim to shape the services we provide to best suit the needs of the women who give birth at our maternity units and their families. The current visiting times are based on feedback from people using the service. However, it is clear that women and families would now like us to review this.”
