Family pays tribute to ‘free spirit’ of Ben Kidson
Saturday 6th November 2010, 11:30AM GMT.
The family of a Shropshire teenager who died in a fishing accident has paid tribute to a “free spirit” who “lived life to the full” and loved being outdoors.
Ben Kidson, 19, of Back Lane, Bomere Heath, was fishing alone at a pool in Shrewsbury and is believed to have suffered an epileptic fit before falling into the water and drowning.
He was a lover of the outdoors and played rugby and cricket locally and at county level.
His parents Tanya and Ian said they had been inundated with cards, calls and text messages from hundreds of people expressing affection for their popular son.
Mr Kidson, managing director of local scooter and motorcycle importer Masco, said: “Ben was a very talented sportsman and had made a huge amount of friends over the years.
“People enjoyed being in his company. He was very much a free spirit and was also very practical and technically minded.
“One of his greatest loves was fishing, we went on many fishing trips together and he had plans to go into fishery management. It was a tragic accident, he had so much promise and talent.”
Paramedics were called to Radbrook Pool in Stanhill Road, Radbrook, at midday on Wednesday after a passer-by found Ben in the water. He was taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital where, despite efforts to resuscitate him, he was pronounced dead at 1.20pm.
A talented cricketer, he played for Bomere Heath and the Grasshoppers and was also junior captain of Shrewsbury Rugby Club.
Mrs Kidson said: “Ben had a mischievous side, he was always outdoors and was extremely adventurous. He was loved by many people.”
Details of the funeral are to be confirmed.
