Oswestry to get new nursing and residential care home
Tuesday 2nd November 2010, 6:29PM GMT.
A second phase for Oswestry’s new health centre will not go ahead – but the town will get a new nursing and residential care home for the elderly.
The complex, which will be built by Coverage Care, will replace Oswestry’s ageing Fairholme.
News of the new home was revealed at a health meeting in the town, organised by North Shropshire MP Owen Paterson.
Mr Paterson said that at the meeting it was confirmed that phase one of Oswestry’s Primary Care Centre, was on target and would be finished by May.
But he said: “The opportunity to build Phase Two alongside the Primary Care Centre has now been lost because of the establishment of the Town Green.”
Phase one of the scheme includes a doctors’ surgery, as well as facilities for health visitors, dentistry and X-rays.
Phase Two of the Primary Care Centre was to have provided new nursing and residential care and also the new home for Oswestry’s maternity unit.
Mr Paterson said despite the news he was pleased to hear about the plans that Coverage Care had to improve local care facilities.
David Coull, chief executive of Coverage Care, said that subject to planning permission the new home would be built in Shrewsbury Road.
He said it would be considerably larger than Fairholme which has 40 residents.
He said: “It will have en suite facilities and most importantly, will be a nursing home which means that it will be a home for life, if needed, for the residents.
“We hope to be able to purchase the land by the end of the financial year, begin work in 2011 with a few to opening in October 2013.
“It will provide a great many jobs for the area.”
