Telford council sets 2013 date for new HQ
Tuesday 2nd November 2010, 4:01PM GMT.
New multi-million pound council headquarters in Telford will be open by 2013 if planners give the scheme the green light, it was revealed today.
The new Civic Offices are set to form part of Telford & Wrekin Council’s £250 million transformation of Southwater. The current office block will be bulldozed to make way for an Asda store.
Council chiefs are set to move to a proposed five-storey building in Southwater if planners approve the scheme early next year.
Russell Griffin, spokesman for Telford & Wrekin Council, said it is hoped the new headquarters will include a restaurant and retail space.
“The new Civic Offices will be the centrepiece to the Southwater area which will be transformed over the next few years to provide a new Main Street that will connect with the Town Park, the International Trade Centre and Southwater Square and provide a range of commercial, leisure and entertainment facilities,” said Mr Griffin.
“A new waterfront feature will be created as part of the Civic Offices that will provide an enhanced Southwater Lake.”
The larger scheme for Southwater involves shops, bars, cafes, two hotels, a new learning and media centre and hundreds of homes.
There will also be two new squares built at either end of the new Main Street, which will provide access to the Civic Offices and an entertainment area.
Mr Griffin added: “The new office complex will be built to very exacting environmental and sustainability standards through incorporating low and zero carbon technologies and renewable energy generating sources.”
“The council is confident that the offices will reduce carbon emissions by more than 10 per cent.”
A decision on the plans will now be made by the council’s planning committee by the end of January.
Telford & Wrekin Council’s plans board last week approved a proposal to start clearing the Southwater site.

“IF” planners give the green light?
Why “if”? Is there any chance that the council’s planners will not approve the plans that their bosses lay before them? Especially with potential job cuts around the corner – time to keep heads down, I’d have thought.
No axe to grind about the project, just musing.
How nice it would be if the planning approval for my new extension had to come from my own employees fearful for their jobs rather than the council.

Where’s this £250 Million coming from? I thought the Councils were broke?

Anyone still wondering why this country is in such a mess ? Councils recklessly spending other peoples i.e. taxpayers money!!
£250 million !!!!!! on a new building when there are acres of empty units across the town – work it out !

As I understand it the £250 million is the total value of the redevelopment of Southwater and not solely the cost of the new council building.

250 million pound is a hell of a lot of money and we have budgets cuts like we do…. i read in the paper that andrew eade(council leader)is not willing to replace the speed camara (something that saves lives) by the football ground in wellington because of money shortage….but he wants a new up to date office…. shocking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Totally agree, Steve.
That is one BIG pot of money. Seems almost criminal when there are people who can’t afford to eat properly. Telford is not an affluent town, but the council seems to think it is.
The council leader says some of the money is coming from the sale of the land that the present council buildings stand on.
Other councils are happy enough to stay in their ‘old’ premises. Why is Telford and Wrekin council going ahead and redeveloping when they have had major staff cuts? Will there be any staff left to man their new state of the art offices?
