Shrewsbury flax mill decision due this week
Monday 1st November 2010, 11:12AM GMT.
A £30 million plan to transform Shrewsbury’s historic flax mill into homes, offices and shops could be given the go-ahead this week after winning the backing of planning chiefs.
The 18th Century Grade I listed mill in Ditherington would provide modern housing and social and leisure opportunities if the project is given approval.
Plans have been in the pipeline for years for the redevelopment of the former maltings site, although the project has faced uncertainty because of the recession.
Shropshire Council’s central planning committee will meet on Thursday to decide on three separate applications over redevelopment.
They include an outline application for the repair and reuse of historic buildings to create workspace and cultural activities, offices, homes, car parking and landscaping.
The second full planning application is for the repair and alterations to the Grade I listed buildings including the demolition of the north silo and demolition of all non-listed buildings on the Spring Gardens sites.
The third application is for listed building consent.
All of the applications have been recommended for approval by council officers.
A report to councillors says: “The proposed scheme represents development within a sustainable location within Shrewsbury town centre. The repair and re-use of the existing buildings will secure the long-term future of the internationally significant Grade I listed buildings.”
