More arson attacks on Shrewsbury estate

Arsonists set rubbish and a wheelie bin on fire in the latest in a series of attacks on a Shrewsbury estate.

The incident in the Herongate area of Shrewsbury came a day after a separate incident in Highley, near Bridgnorth, in which a fire broke out involving eight wheelie bins.

A fire crew and police were called to Clee View in Highley at about 1.40am yesterday following reports of a blaze involving the bins.

In Herongate, rubbish and a wheelie bin were set alight early today in two separate suspected arson attacks in the area which has been hit by a number of suspicious fires over the past month.

In the latest incidents firefighters were first called to tackle a fire involving a quantity of rubbish in Tawneylea at just after 1am.

While the firefighters were still at the scene, they were called to a wheelie bin fire in nearby Broadhaven Close just after 1.10am.

Alex Howell, crew manager at Shrewsbury, said the incidents were being treated as being of “dubious” origin. He praised residents for alerting crews to such incidents.

“It’s down to the vigilance of local residents and we encourage them to contact Crimestoppers or police,” he added.

Last month some residents on Herongate claimed they had been forced to tape up letterboxes amid a spate of arsons.

    let me have my say

    I do hope that when these idiots are caught, that they are made to pay the full cost of having the emergency service out to deal with these fires as well as a sentence. If it kids, make the parents pay.

    Annoyed!!

    I would like to put this message out to whoever is causing these fires and thinks it’s a joke to set fire to people’s property or even worse somebody’s house. You are putting people’s lives at risk!! I shouldn’t have to point this out, but obviously the individuals that are doing this have no common sense and aren’t using the brains they were born with.

    Let’s put the shoe on the other foot shall we? I’d like to take one of the Arsonist’s most prized possessions and set it on fire in front of them and see how funny they find it then!!

    Xpistophorous

    A spokesman for Shropshire Fire & Rescue Service described the fires as being of “dubious” origin.
    Why is it that when spokespersons for the police or fire service respond to what in this case is an obvious incident of reckless damage they are scared stiff of not being politically correct?
    How about this press release instead?
    “These fires are the result of the actions of mindless idiots that care not a jot for public safety but instead waste their time causing as much damage as they can. If and when they are caught they will be put before the courts and if found guilty given realistic prison sentences”?
