Shrewsbury Flower Show to remain Shrewsbury Flower Show

Shrewsbury Flower Show officials today said they had no plans to change the name of the floral extravaganza in the immediate future after the idea was put forward at a private meeting.

Members of Shropshire Horticultural Society, which runs the flower show, heard a report by a sub committee chairman at a meeting last week in which the proposal was mentioned.

But despite the idea being put forward, show bosses today said a change of name was not something they were “actively pursuing”.

Lieutenant Colonel Mike Carver, the current flower show chairman, said today: “There was mention at a meeting of changing the name of the show.

“It’s not the first time its been mentioned but it was read out during a series of reports and not discussed.”

He said the suggestion had come up a number of times as some committee members felt that while everyone locally knew what the show had to offer people outside of the area might not realise there was more to it than flowers. But he added: “A change of name is not actively being considered at the present time.”

In the 1970s, its name was changed from the Shrewsbury Musical and Floral Fete to Shrewsbury Flower Show.

Russell Mulford, a former committee member of the Shropshire Horticultural Society, said: “Some years ago the idea was suggested to drop the word ‘flower’ but it was rejected by members.

“The name has been in place for a long time so it would have been a break with tradition.”
