Melissa Cohen – You’re fired!

Sometimes, just sometimes, you get exactly what you want, writes Tracey O’Sullivan. And even though it might come at a price it feels so good – such as Melissa Cohen being given her marching orders on last night’s Apprentice – television gold.

In fact I would say Melissa had been officially “retributed” for not only claiming to be the “best pitcher you have ever seen” when in fact she couldn’t give away water in the Sahara Desert, but also for being one of the most annoying people to ever take on the Apprentice challenge.  And with some of those in the programme’s hall of fame, that’s really saying something.

And I’m sorry but the black Pulp Fiction-style bob she showed off for The Apprentice – You’re Fired with Dara O’Briain wasn’t nearly as much of a disguise as this this woman will need if she’s ever to work in business again.

She may have claimed to have changed after her experience but her crop is not the only thing that needs the chop. She needs to find a new career.

I make no apology for there being no manouvrement on my opinion here and for not mincing my words. Melissa certainly didn’t  – in fact she just made words up.  Retributed is also one of her little gems.

But if ever there was a candidate who deserved to be fired it was her. Most of the time there is a niggling doubt that they are just the victims of the savage edit room looking for the most tantalising television. But when Karen Brady accused her of just talking and talking instead of listening to her clients you could see even the most cynical edit couldn’t have made her look worse than she actually was. And that was all too obvious as she pitched a shower head and a garden fork thingamabob to Debenhams.

“We don’t sell shower heads,” said the buyer looking distinctly bored. So Melissa ignored him and proceeded to try and sell him yet another item they didn’t stock or indeed want to touch with a barge pole. Poor team leader Jamie Lester looked crestfallen and rightly so. And here was the pain for the gain: Jamie losing during a week in which he clocked up massive sales. It didn’t seem fair somehow.

He did a damn good job of being project manager last night, even though Lord Sugar pulled him up for not keeping a closer eye on his satellite team. But then again there would be no tension in the boardroom showdown if all three in the firing line didn’t get some kind of telling off from the man in the raised throne. It’s unlikely to do Jamie’s chances much harm in the long-run and it was necessary, but it’s a sure bet fans couldn’t have faced another week with Melissa escaping the boot.

I would have said the same for Stuart Baggs ‘The brand’, but after after offending the producer of the baby-grow product and losing his team the obvious best-seller, he toned down and didn’t have half as much screen time as Melissa. Which means in the grand scheme of things he may just be taking some well-meaning advice on his over-eager outbursts.

Let’s hope he at least learns to be gracious. The catfighing may have continued on last night’s show, with Paloma and Laura picking a fight in Soho after failing to agree how to divide the spoils (Lord Sugar branded this ‘The brawl of Old Compton’), but they had nothing on Melissa’s petulant exit.

“Well done for ganging up on me, you horrible people,” she snarled before refusing to shake Jamie’s hand as they left. And the toddler tantrum got even worse in her cab ride home.

“Karmicly they will be retributed,” she said furiously. “The universe speaks louder than I do.”

Somehow, I doubt it.
