Agents quizzed over Ruyton-XI-Towns housing plan

More than 30 residents attended a special meeting to quiz an agent on proposals to build up to 80 new homes in a small village near Oswestry.

A planning application has been submitted to Shropshire Council to develop the homes on the site of an old dairy farm.

Pentons Haulage And Coldstore plan to transform the brownfield site, on School Road, Olden Lane, Ruyton-XI-Towns, into a new housing complex.

Last night the applicants’ agent met members of the public including six parish councillors, seven members of the village hall committee and representatives from school governors from the primary school and Baschurch.

Chairman of Ruyton-XI-Towns Parish Council, Colin Case, said: “We had good representation and it was really encouraging.

“I think people were reasonably accepting that the site is going to be developed although 80 houses sounds a lot.”

At the meeting residents spoke of concerns about the proposals including the increase in traffic, the proportion of affordable homes and how much money would be given as part of the section 106 agreement — which is a cash from developers given to the community.

Councillor Case, said: “A contentious point was if you add 80 houses to the existing 400 in the village that is 20 per cent more traffic and people had concerns about that. There is no real solution to that. If people live in the homes they have cars.”

Ruyton-XI-Towns Parish Council will meet at the village’s Memorial Hall on Monday at 7.30pm to make a recommendation on the application.

Councillor Case said: “It was a good debate last night and gave people a much better understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of that application.”

the traffic is a nightmare there already! Lorries and coaches and narrow roads, its terrible, why anyone would want to live there is beyond me! Traffic is a real problem in Ruyton x1 towns especially at school times.
