Planners to decide on Telford town centre revamp
Wednesday 27th October 2010, 10:00PM BST.
The first signs of a £250 million transformation of Telford town centre could soon be visible if planners tonight give the go-ahead to begin work in the town.
But before work can begin to build the shops, bars, cafés and hundreds of homes at Southwater, the existing lake must be drained and a visitor centre bulldozed.
An application to carry out the work will go before planners at Telford & Wrekin Council at 6pm.
If passed, it will mark the first phase in the development and contractors will be able to begin preparing the land for the massive build.
Members of the borough council’s plans board will meet tonight to consider the plans which include demolishing Spout Farm House visitor centre, an electricity sub-station and dredging the Southwater lake.
In August, councillors approved plans for a replacement visitor centre in Hinkshay Road, Malinslee.
The latest proposals will be the first major part of the Southwater redevelopment project which council chiefs claim will transform Telford and make it a tourist hub.
A report given to councillors said the latest proposed works would provide the infrastructure from which sites within Southwater could be brought forward for development.
Members of the plans board are recommended to approve the work, subject to conditions.

Bob you cynic :)lol but you are right because they will need to build a new HQ before their old one becomes rubble and the new ASDA takes shape.

Bob is right that they will surely grant permission for their own new offices but that is not what this planning app was for. This was for engineering works to reprofile the ground, install drainage create the new main street and drain the lake.
