Grandfather named as rider killed in accident

A Mid Wales motorcyclist who died in a collision at the weekend was today named as 60-year-old grandfather Andrew Shaw, from Machynlleth.

Mr Shaw was involved in a crash with two cars while riding his BMW motorcycle on Sunday afternoon.

The incident happened on the A487 between Machynlleth and Aberystwyth at Bow Street, just before 1pm.

Mr Shaw had only retired as a paramedic with the Wales Ambulance Service on October 8, where he had served for 26 years.

He was a member of Shropshire and Powys Advanced Riders and had recently taken up part-time work in retirement with the Patient Transport Service.

His son Luke said: “He was a much-loved father and grandad and would go out of his way to help people.

“He was very practical man and helped all his children with their home improvements over the years.

“He was respected, well-known and will be a great loss to both the family and the community.”

“He was recently widowed. His second wife, my mother Cherrill Shaw, passed away suddenly from cancer in November last year after 29 years of marriage.

“He is survived by his children Luke, Amber, Holly, his grandchildren, his father Peter, and his brothers Mark and Bob. He is also survived by two sons, Simon and Sam, from his first marriage.”

Although the family have not yet made funeral arrangements, they have for donations in place of flowers to the Wales Air Ambulance,

Amongst Mr Shaw’s hobbies were singing and riding his motorcycle.

“His first love was singing and he had joined two local singing groups.

Last month he sang in London for a water charity,” Luke said.
