Powys County Council role has £135,000 salary

A pilot scheme to combine a top post within Powys County Council and Powys teaching Health Board as part of wider merger plans will start in January.

Powys teaching Local Health Board is advertising the role of chief executive – with a wage of £135,000 a year – which will be a post combined with the council’s strategic director of care and well-being.

The board has defended the salary offered, saying it reflects the expected level on a national basis.

The pilot will be formally launched in January 2011 but shadow arrangements are now under way to appoint somebody to the role.

A spokeswoman for Powys teaching Local Health Board, said: “The tHB is very pleased that it is now able to move forward with the permanent appointment for this very important post, which will further develop integration with the local authority.

She said the salary “has been agreed at a national level”.

Yeah, cos a fair salary in London is necessary in the nation’s armpit that is Powys…

They might struggle offering £135k, you get what you pay for and there are other similar positions around the country paying much more… therefore Powys will end up being run by a second rate reject.

Oh of course – “we are all in it together” – its just some of us are more in it than others – poor old council workers

It’s the going rate. Anybody is free to gain the right qualifications and experience, work their way up the ladder and apply for jobs like this anywhere in the country. What’s the problem?

No point in “merging” if you’re creating a new job and paying for the old ones to disappear.

Doesn’t either post in the proposed merger have an incumbent at the moment?

If so, give the other job to them as well and tell them to carry on at their current salary.

Or are they waiting for a typically generous “Powys Pay-Off” on a Friday before taking up their post on the following Monday?

In the private sector, boss would come into your office and tell you that you’re taking over the work of the person made redundant as well – no question about it, no enhanced payment, no bonus.

And let’s not forget that this is Powys that we’re talking about; a £135K salary may be the norm nationwide, (i.e. in the South), but it’s over 10x the average Powys wage AND paid in an area where prices are much lower than the South.

    Here’s a money-saving opportunity > I’ll do it for half of what you’re offering!

    Any lower bids, anybody?
